Chrissie and Gavin booked me as their wedding photographer based on a view of my website from their home in Australia. They are both former Brighton residents and were getting married back here to be near to family and friends. We managed meet up in Brighton, a few days before the wedding, so we could go over the schedule and briefly get to know each other.
Chrissie prepared for the day in MyHotel in Jubilee Street, with her sister Helen and bridesmaid. I’ve never been here before and was really impressed with the way it looked, ultra modern and really stylish; check out the mandala wall art in the photos.
It was short walk from the hotel to The Brighton Unitarian Church in New Road. Chrissie was escorted there through the busy Saturday crowds by her father. I’d photographed another Unitarian wedding in Ditchling Chapel recently and have come to like their services, not too heavy on specific religious beliefs but full of emotion and warmth. I was allowed to move around and use a little bit of flash during the ceremony, which helped hugely. Thank you to John, the minister, for that.
After the ceremony, and a quick drink at The Mash Tun opposite the church, everybody piled on to a private hire double decker bus and made their way to Brighton College for the reception. I was last here in January and the Great Hall has had a makeover since then. The lower walls used to be paneled in a very dark and institutional looking brown wood, they have now been painted light green (sounds bad, looks good) and the rest of the hall has had a fresh coat of paint. Together with a few candelabras, some nice table settings and some fabric draped up to the ceiling it looked fantastic.
The bride and groom were not wildly keen on photos of themselves but, with a little wheedling, I managed to get two short sessions with them at the college (Your grandchildren will thank me). Chrissie was wearing a really striking designer dress brought from Australia, which just had to be photographed, and I think the couple look great in the posed shots.
